Venice, Louisiana is the end of the road
when you head down the west bank of the Mississippi River and to many it feels like you have reached the end of the world. Once inhabited primarily by the offshore oil and gas industry, Venice has become the jumping off point for some of the best fishing anywhere on the planet. The nutrients carried by the Mississippi River feed the estuaries in Southern Louisiana and the food chain in the Mississippi River Delta that is the heart of the gulf fishery. The waters surrounding Venice are alive with baitfish and the game fish that are there for the feast, from inshore species such as Redfish, Speckled Trout and Flounderto world class bluewater fish such as Blue Marlin, Tuna, Dolphin and Wahoo, to a wide range of bottom fish and game fish, including Snapper, Grouper, Cobia, King Mackerel, Amberjacks and others that inhabit the many offshore structures. The Offshore oil industry has contributed substantially to the tremendous fishing near Venice. There are over 3800 platforms and drill ships accessible to fishermen in water depths ranging from 5 to 7000. These rigs create incredible reefs in area that has no other significant structure. The vertical reef structures attract all types of bait and game fish and create a fishing environment like no other. In addition to the numerous Oil Platforms that dot the horizon as you exit the Mississippi River, the Gulf Stream provides numerous opportunities for fishing out of Venice. The warm waters of the Gulf Stream current push through the Gulf of Mexico like an invisible river, forming weed lines and bringing both bait and predators. Bluewater fish such as dolphin, tuna, wahoo and marlin are attracted to the weedlines; however, they are not the only fish to pursue, as these same weedlines are often loaded with triple tail and cobia as well. With such variety, Venice certainly holds itself out as earning the right to call itself a sportsmens paradise.
